What “Unheated / Untreated” Means & Why It Matters

Most sapphires (especially yellow, blue, etc.) are heat treated to improve colour or clarity. Untreated or natural sapphires (no heat, no diffusion, no chemicals) are much rarer and hence more valuable.

Treatment detection is done via gemological analysis (inclusions, absorption spectra, etc.). Some colour features (colour centres) present in untreated stones get changed or removed by heat.

In Sri Lankan yellow sapphires, there are thermally unstable yellow/orange colour centres, which are diagnostic of untreated stones. When you heat such stones, these centres may change.

---

Typical Measures / Examples (Sri Lanka, Untreated Yellow Sapphires)

Here are some real examples as references to understand size, colour, price ranges, etc.:

A 6.55 ct Ceylon yellow sapphire, unheated & untreated, oval cut — specific gravity ~4.00, RI ~1.760–1.770.

A 4.65 ct one with similar specs.

Sizes typically vary from ~2-10 ct for good quality astrological / jewelry stones. Larger stones with good clarity and colour, untreated, are rare.

---

How to Assess Quality

When checking or buying one, here are the main criteria, especially for an untreated yellow sapphire:

1. Colour / Tone / Saturation

Colour should be a clean, vibrant yellow (golden yellow, canary yellow, lemon‐yellow depending on taste).

Avoid too much brown, grey, or greenish undertone if you want a “pure” yellow.

Uniform colour is preferred; zoning or patches may lower value.

2. Clarity & Inclusions

Even in natural stones, inclusions are expected (e.g., rutile (silk), “feathers,” etc.). But eye‐clean (looking clean without magnification) stones are much more desirable.

Inclusions in untreated stones are part of provenance; some patterns like silk or certain growth lines are considered “characteristics of origin.”

3. Cut & Shape

Good faceting that maximizes brilliance – proper angles, symmetry, polish. Mixed cuts / cushion / oval / radiant etc.

A cut that improves colour (by minimizing windows or areas where light passes without being refracted) is good.

4. Size / Carat Weight

Bigger stones with high clarity & strong colour, untreated, increase exponentially in price.

But if a stone is large but has weak colour / many inclusions, value drops.

5. Origin & Certification

Origin “Sri Lanka / Ceylon” adds value (given its reputation for fine sapphires).

Important to get a certificate from a recognized gemological lab mentioning that the stone is unheated / untreated, and ideally confirming origin.

Lab tests should check for treatments, trace elements, spectral features.

6. Durability / Wearability

Since sapphire is hard (Mohs 9), it is durable. But cleavage planes, internal fractures, etc., can affect toughness.

Polishing & finishing also matter – sharp facets, no chips etc.

Here’s what I found on natural blue sapphire (Bangkok / “Bangkok sapphire”) — what it usually means, what to watch out for, and some buying sources — plus some tips if you’re considering getting one.

---

What “Bangkok Blue Sapphire” generally means

“Bangkok sapphire” often refers to blue sapphire gemstones that are either mined in Thailand (or nearby) or treated/cut/polished there. Bangkok is a major hub for gem cutting, treatment, and trade in sapphires.

Many Bangkok sapphires are heated or treated to enhance their color. Fully untreated sapphires are much rarer and more expensive. Always check what kind of treatment (if any) the gemstone has undergone.

For astrological/vedic purposes, people prefer sapphires that are natural and untreated (or at least minimally treated).

---

Things to check / criteria

If you want a quality natural blue sapphire, especially from Bangkok, here are some key factors:

1. Origin & Certification

Make sure the seller provides a lab certificate (e.g. GIA, AGS, IGI, SSEF) confirming the origin, whether it’s natural, and what treatments have been done.

“Bangkok origin” + “lab certified natural” is a good start.

2. Color

A good blue sapphire should have a pure, rich blue color (sometimes ‘royal blue’). Avoid sapphires with too much gray or brown tint.

Uniform color saturation is better.

3. Carat / Size

Bigger stones cost much more. But small stones with high clarity & color can be very valuable too.

4. Clarity

Inclusions are common in natural sapphires; what matters is whether they affect transparency or brilliance. Eye-clean stones (i.e. no visible inclusions to naked eye) are preferred.

5. Cut

The cut should bring out the stone’s color, sparkle, and make it look proportional. Poor cutting reduces value even if color is good.

6. Treatment disclosure

Heating is common and generally acceptable if disclosed. Other treatments (e.g. diffusion, glass filling) are less desirable, especially for astrological gemstone use.

7. Price

Prices vary widely depending on all the above. Make sure you compare similar quality stones to avoid overpaying.

These give you an idea of what market offers look like.
Possible pitfalls / what to avoid

Stones advertised as “Bangkok sapphire” but actually treated heavily without disclosure.

Very low price for “natural, untreated” big stones — likely something is off.

No certificate or unclear origin.

If you like, I can pull up some available natural (possibly untreated) Bangkok blue sapphires within a price range you’re comfortable with, so you can see concrete options. Do you want that? If yes, what’s your budget per carat / size / clarity preference?

Trade & Value Considerations

Because untreated natural stones are rare, there is a premium over treated stones of similar colour & clarity.

Also, demand is high for astrological use / collector pieces. So size + provenance + certificate can significantly increase value.

In India, such stones are often used in rings / pendent with astrological relevance, so folklore / belief also affect demand & price.

If you like, I can pull up recent auction / retail price trends of natural, unheated Sri Lankan yellow sapphires so you get a sense of what kind of money such a stone might fetch today. Do you want that?

How to Assess Quality
When checking or buying one, here are the main criteria, especially for an untreated yellow sapphire:
Colour / Tone / Saturation
Colour should be a clean, vibrant yellow (golden yellow, canary yellow, lemon‐yellow depending on taste).
Avoid too much brown, grey, or greenish undertone if you want a “pure” yellow.
Uniform colour is preferred; zoning or patches may lower value.
Cut & Shape
Good faceting that maximizes brilliance – proper angles, symmetry, polish. Mixed cuts / cushion / oval / radiant etc.
A cut that improves colour (by minimizing windows or areas where light passes without being refracted) is good.
Size / Carat Weight
Bigger stones with high clarity & strong colour, untreated, increase exponentially in price.
But if a stone is large but has weak colour / many inclusions, value drops.
Durability / Wearability
Since sapphire is hard (Mohs 9), it is durable. But cleavage planes, internal fractures, etc., can affect toughness.
Polishing & finishing also matter – sharp facets, no chips etc.
